Woodies
“Woodies” is the name for the sculptures I like to make out of driftwood.
Almost all of the wood these are created from comes from a single, glacier fed lake in Alaska. However to date I have collected and used wood from Washington, California, Minnesota, and Florida.
The wood from each place is startlingly different. The glacier wood tends to be more resilient, probably because it’s been so beat up while in the ice and then moving water before it is coughed up onto shore. It also smells better because it has been in fresh water rather than sea water. Regardless of where I have gotten the wood from the sculptures are both very sturdy and very fragile. I’ve had my heart broken on several occasions when a sculpture has cracked in shipping or has been knocked from the wall, so if you own one be careful!
