Prints

I was very lucky to have been introduced to printmaking by a friend of mine, Cynthia Veum while in school at Minneapolis College of Art and Design. She had taken itaglio and thought I would really like it. A wonderful and talented artist, Jody Williams was my first professor. She was incredibly patient with me and fostered my interest despite my struggling craftsmanship which continues to conspire against me.

After school I quickly found myself making messes and learning how painful it can be to print an edition by hand on a kitchen table. I use a wooden spoon typically, although I did once manage to print a block using simple pressure by stepping on the paper and block.

I have worked in intaglio, lithography, screenprinting, relief (wood, linoleum) and xerox transfer using a litho press. In the last decade I haven’t had access to a press so I haven’t done anything except relief printing because I can print by hand.  I tend to use water based ink these days but trust me, I’d still rather use oil based any day.

My all time favorite printmaker is Leonard Baskin. If you know his work you may see his influence on me. I love line work. Linear delineation of space and mass and emotion is delicious and a constant challenge that I cannot always rise up to meet.
